Insurance cancelled? Here is what IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home actually means
If you just got a non-renewal notice or a steep premium hike tied to wildfire risk, you are not alone, and IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home is the program worth understanding before you do anything else. It is the closest thing there is to a recognized, documented way to show an insurer that your home sits in a different risk category than the one next door.
What it is
Wildfire Prepared Home is the first national wildfire mitigation designation, built on research by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, and it is available in Oregon. You earn it by completing a set of science-based actions across the three areas of a home that decide whether it survives an ember storm: the roof, building features like vents and gutters, and the defensible space around the structure.
It is not a list of tips. It is a standard, a verification process, and an annual maintenance requirement. The point of all of it is documentation an insurer can actually recognize.
Two levels: Essential and Enhanced
IBHS renamed the levels in June 2026. Base became Essential, Plus became Enhanced. The standards did not change, only the names. Here is the comparison in plain terms.
Essential (formerly Base): core ember protection
Built for most existing homes and for homeowners just starting wildfire work.
Targets wind-driven embers, the leading cause of home ignition.
Covers the core vulnerabilities: a Class A roof, ember-resistant vents, clean gutters, the noncombustible zero-to-five-foot zone, fences and decks where they meet the house, and managed defensible space.
Reachable by retrofit on most existing homes.
Enhanced (formerly Plus): added flame and radiant heat protection
Builds on every Essential requirement, then adds more, because wildfire exploits the weakest link.
Adds protection against direct flame and radiant heat: higher-performance siding, multi-pane or tempered windows, ignition-resistant decks, and stronger defensible space within thirty feet.
Usually pursued during new construction or a major exterior remodel, when those materials are easier to build in.

How you actually get designated
This part is worth being blunt about. The designation is verified by an independent, IBHS-trained evaluator. It is not self-reported, and it is not issued by your contractor. You complete the required work, the third party inspects the home in person, and IBHS issues the certificate.
The designation is good for three years, with a short annual review confirming you have kept up your landscaping and Zone 0.

One thing we will not do is promise a specific insurance discount. Carriers handle mitigation credits differently, and some recognize the designation more than others.
