Most wildfires in Central Oregon don't arrive as a wall of flame. They arrive as embers, carried a mile or more ahead of the fire front. What happens when those embers land on your property depends almost entirely on what's there to catch them.

Defensible space is the cleared, managed buffer between your home and the surrounding fuel load. Done right, it slows fire intensity, gives firefighters a place to work, and directly reduces the ignition risk to your structure. Done wrong, or not at all, it's the reason homes burn when neighboring homes don't.

SafeHaven treats all three zones on your property, aligned with Deschutes County's Community Wildfire Protection Plan, NFPA Firewise USA guidelines, and Oregon Residential Specialty Code standards. Every job includes written documentation suitable for your insurance carrier.

What We Do in Each Zone

Zone 0: 0-5 ft (Immediate Ignition Zone)

This is where most house fires start during a wildfire. Embers land against your foundation, under your deck, in your gutters, and against your siding. If there's combustible material within five feet of your home, fire has a direct path to your structure.

We clear all combustible material from the immediate foundation zone: mulch, wood chips, dead vegetation, stored firewood, and debris accumulation against walls and under decks. We also coordinate ember-resistant vent and gutter guard installation in this zone.

Zone 1:
(Lean, Clean & Green)

This zone is about reducing flame spread. Ladder fuels, which are low shrubs and branches that carry ground fire up into the tree canopy, are removed. Trees are pruned and spaced. Flammable ornamental plants are replaced or thinned. What's left is intentional, fire-resistant, and maintained.

We follow the 10-foot crown-to-crown spacing standard for trees in this zone and remove branches within 6 to 10 feet of the ground. All debris is hauled off-site.

Zone 2: 30-100 ft (Fuel Break Management)

On larger rural properties, Zone 2 is where fire intensity is reduced before it reaches your home. Brush is cleared, dead and down material is removed, and tree canopy is thinned to interrupt the path of a running crown fire.

We work with natural topography and existing vegetation to create a realistic fuel break. Not a moonscape, but a managed, intentional spacing that slows and weakens fire before it reaches Zone 1.

FAQ

Question 1: Is defensible space required by law in Deschutes County?

Yes. The City of Bend enforces flammable vegetation standards under Municipal Code 13.30.005. Deschutes County also has wildfire hazard mitigation requirements for new construction in unincorporated areas. Beyond legal requirements, many insurance carriers now require documented defensible space as a condition of coverage in high-risk zones.

Question 2: Will this help with my homeowners insurance?

It can. Oregon law requires insurers to consider documented mitigation when assessing your risk. The key word is documented. Work without a written report may not result in any insurance benefit. SafeHaven provides the documentation insurers need to act on what you've done.

Question 3: When is the best time to schedule?

Late fall through early spring. Vegetation is dormant, conditions are safer for crews, and you avoid the spring booking rush. Fire season in Central Oregon typically runs June through October. Work done before June gives you the full season of coverage.

Question 4: How long does a typical job take?

Most single-family residential properties take 1 to 3 days depending on fuel load, acreage, and zone conditions. Larger rural parcels may take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline during your free evaluation.

Question 5: Do you remove trees?

Yes. We coordinate with licensed arborists for tree removal that exceeds our direct scope and handle all scheduling. Selective tree removal is often part of Zone 1 and Zone 2 work. We'll flag what needs to come out and why during your assessment.
